Definition of Religion – The Real Meaning of the Word Religion

Religion is not a bad word. The definition of religion in and of itself denotes peace and reconciliation. Religion does not encourage people to “stop thinking”. In fact, religion encourages people to think about how they can re-bind themselves or re-connect with a God who is infinitely more intelligent and loving.

I have witnessed those that have dedicated their lives to re-connecting with God, become infinitely happier than those that fight against God, or even the idea of a God or an intelligent designer. Success seems to find them and their lives are much happier. People’s unhappiness seems like it always stems from a feeling of disconnection, worthlessness, and confusion.

Religion Definition or The True Meaning Of The Word Religion

We need more people to understand the correct definition of religion and the ultimate meaning of the word religion. The word religion comes from the Latin and while there are a few different translations, the most prevalent roots take you back to the Latin word “Re-Ligare”. “Ligare” means “to bind” or to “connect”.  Adding the “re” before “ligare” causes the word to mean “Re-Bind” or “Re-Connect.”

definition of religion

Live your religion tenaciously and  “re-bind” yourself to a God who cares about you and wants you back. Think about this logically. If Darwin is right and we’re here by chance, then when we die, we’ll go into the ground and become fertilizer.

Our life was for nothing. What we learned was for nothing. We won’t know anyone and it won’t matter whether we were religious or not.

But, if by chance religion is right, and God does exist, then we have everything to lose by not being religious and “re-connecting” to God while in this life. It will in no way hurt a person to seek after and follow God.

There is massive controversy surrounding the word “religion” and the definition of religion. People define religion as a set of beliefs, and then atheists assume that because a set of beliefs has become corrupt, then all religion is corrupt.

The media and entertainment outlets nowadays are notorious for this. Bill Maher sums up the atheistic movement to rid the world of any mention of God with comments like this;

We are a nation that is unenlightened because of religion. I do believe that. I think religion stops people from thinking. I think it justified crazies.

It’s amazing to me how much time guys like Bill Maher and other renowned atheists spend bashing religion. It’s like they can’t leave it alone. It gets in their blood and won’t leave their mind. They have those fleeting thoughts of “what if this is true” or “what if God does exist” that causes them to lash out against the idea, and ensure that others know that they would never succumb to a notion of God or intelligent design.

They cite massacres that have taken place in the name of religion such as the crusades or the inquisition but fail to recognize the exponentially worse atrocities that have taken place at the hands of Godless nations and leaders.

They fail to see that the most enlightened people and nations have come as a result of intense religious activity. People forget that some of the greatest thinkers this world has ever seen came out of a revolution stemming from religious freedom. In fact, I know of very few people that are successful in life that are not religious in some way.

Success story after success story in life gives glory to God. If there is any industry that seems to yield a high rate of atheists, it is the entertainment business that Bill Maher finds himself in. This is because many celebrities become their own God, and any mention of religion takes glory and attention away from those Hollywood stars that are so used to getting some much attention.

We need more high profile people to give glory to God instead of trying to become God themselves.

If by chance religion is right, and God does exist, then we have everything to lose by not being religious and “re-connecting” to God while in this life. It will in no way hurt a person to seek after and follow God.
